They Went To War

Concentrating on the personal stories of the casualties commemorated on Ely War Memorials should not blind us to the fact that, of course, there were many more men who survived World War One and returned.  The Cathedral and churches of Ely as well as local establishments, all kept "Rolls of Honour" throughout the War, and thereafter, which were not lists of the dead, but lists of all those who had fought; Needhams School at the top of Back Hill, for example, had a Roll of Honour which included the names of about 160 "old boys" who were with the Forces.
