Which areas of Ely were worst hit?
It is immediately clear from the map that the greatest number of casualties lived in the poorer areas of the city around Broad Street and the river, or on the edge of the city where the farmworkers congregated. A further forty farmworkers who appear on the main Ely memorial lived outside of the city boundaries, chiefly in Prickwillow, but also in Stuntney, (Queen) Adelaide, Shippea Hill and Chettisham.
Below the men are grouped by street - in most cases this information comes from the 1911 census. This allows us to guess at possible friendship groups, although obviously other friendships would have been created at school, in work, and, for many, through organisations such as the Territorial Army.
