They did not come home
Note: the stories of the soldiers on the Ely Memorials are grouped together alphabetically on pdfs. Clicking on the name of the soldier in which you are interested will bring up the whole group. At the bottom of the page you will find the stories of another thirty-seven young Ely men who do not appear on the Ely Market Place memorial, although a handful are commemorated elsewhere in the city. Men who were boarding pupils at King's School Ely can be found at the very bottom of the page.
Please be aware that It is also often impossible to say for definite if a soldier fought at a certain battle, especially if there are no service papers available for him. Some men served in the UK for years after enlisting, others went out weeks after finishing training. Also at the times of certain battles a man could have been injured, on leave, or in the reserve trenches. It is also difficult to say with certainty when men were transferred between battalions. On some of the individuals' pages you will find their battalion's movements are shown, but this should not be taken as a guarantee that the soldier himself was then currently with his battalion on the Front.

Ely Casualties not named on the Ely Market Place Memorial
The families of Ely soldiers who were killed in World War One put forward the names of their husbands, sons and brothers for the Market Place Memorial, but the records of the Commonwealth War Grave Commission show that there were a number of casualties who were born in Ely, or resided in the city, but whose names have not been included. At this distance it is not possible to explain why these soldiers were not listed; in some cases it was simply because they had no living relatives left in the city, as was often the case with those who were sons of former militia officers. The names of some of those who were born in Ely have been “recovered” and are included below, although it is possible, even probable, that there were others. The Ely Standard has also been the source of casualty information, as it reported the deaths of men who worked in Ely at the time they enlisted, although they were not natives of the city. Even here care must be taken, e.g. the Ely Standard of 29th September 1916 informed its readers of the death of a native of Ely, Albert Henry Purbrick of the Welsh Regiment, whose name had been taken from the official casualty lists - its readers would have struggled to identify Albert as he actually came from Ely in Cardiff!
Many of the soldiers listed on the Ely Market Place Memorial are also commemorated on the memorial in their parish church or village green, however, there are some soldiers who are named only on a church memorial in the city, but not on Ely Market Place. The decision on where a beloved son, brother or husband was to be commemorated remained with their family and friends, but the names of this handful of soldiers also deserve to be remembered as they were known in Ely. The names are as follows:
The additional names of those born or working in Ely and the surrounding villages are:

The names are as follows:

- On the Holy Trinity Memorial at the cathedral; H K Cook
- On the Methodist Memorial; Private Thomas H Bruce of the 14th Warwickshire Regiment
- On the memorial in the Countess of Huntingdon’s Church; Ben Langford
- On the choristers’ memorial in Ely Cathedral; J W Blane and W. Newton
- South aisle memorial in Ely Cathedral; Albert Julian Pell of Wilburton Manor
- On the catechism class memorial in St Peter’s Church you can also find; Bertram Downing of Lynn Road and Victor Shelton of Back Hill but these names can be discounted as the first should read Bert Dorling (see main memorial) and the second actually survived the War.
- On the Stuntney Memorial there is one name which does not also appear on the main Ely memorial; John Ellis Taylor
- The majority of soldiers on the memorial in the King’s School at Ely do not figure on the main city memorial. Their details can be found as a separate list.
